In 1707, 22-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach took up his post as organist at St. Blaise Lutheran Church in Mühlhausen. His arrival came just a few months after a devastating fire had destroyed a district of the historic town and part of the church.

A pastor, perhaps sensing that the fire was the result of the Lord's judgment for the town's sin, then asked Johann Sebastian Bach to compose a cantata based on Psalm 130: Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (From the depths, I cry out to you Lord). It was the perfect choice of text for the composer to set to music.

This cantata is one of the earliest to have come down to us, and this All Saints' Day is an ideal time to hear it again within the walls of Bonsecours Church.
