The harp was a discreet but omnipresent instrument in French music of the Belle Époque. Its delicate, pearlescent textures, its evocation of a fantasized antique sonority, its vibratory colors: everything about it destined it for an aesthetic where symbolism and soon Impressionism set the tone.

The imaginary Antiquity that bathes Debussy's Deux danses, where Dorian and Lydian modes alternate with archaisms, just like the diaphanous effluvia of Lorraine-born Pierné in his evocative Konzertstück, will thus find a new incarnation under the fingers of the talented Alexandra Bidi.

Another Lorraine-born composer, the decadent symbolist Verlaine, offers the inspiration of his Fêtes galantes, where Watteau and Commedia dell'arte meet, to Fauré's evocative Masques et Bergamasques.

Ma Mère l'Oye is one of Ravel's forays into the magical world of the tender years, where imagination reigns supreme and, through the grace of a child's eye, makes visible the marvels of the everyday around us. It was for the children of his friends Godebski that he composed this set of pieces that revisit Perrault's fairy tales in music. Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Little Thumb or Laideronnette, the Empress of the Pagodas, all meet in the fairytale garden of Ravelian orchestration, which here reaches heights of evocation, gentleness and sublime blends of timbre to open up this realm of multiple splendors.
