What remains after the unspeakable, after the end, after the silence?
Through four major 20th-century works, this program explores the answers that music provides to the two great questions of existence: death and spirituality.
Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki tackles them in Thrène à la mémoire des victimes d'Hiroshima, a veritable orchestral cry that questions the afterlife after the apocalypse.
Then, Debussy takes us into a dreamlike world with his Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, where the "after" becomes an eternal recommencement, a flute phrase like an infinite, suspended loop that forms, with Poulenc's Piano Concerto, a precious contrast between lightness and melancholy, like a call to resilience and life.
Finally, Honegger's Symphonie n° 3 "Liturgique" and the hope of redemption after the darkness at the end of a singular melody that sways and invites us to reflect and, who knows? Hope.
