A textile industrialist, Charles Cartier-Bresson (1853-1921) is also known for having amassed an important collection of Asian art objects, a large part of which was bequeathed to the Musée des beaux-arts de Nancy in 1936. After an ambitious restoration campaign, the Japanese theater masks from Charles Cartier-Bresson's former collections will be returning to Nancy. Their presentation in the gallery will raise public awareness of the challenges and achievements of this painstaking work, the fruit of a Franco-Japanese scientific exchange partnership. Since 2019, this partnership has brought together teams from Nancy and Kanazawa, our sister city since 1973.
Thanks to several external loans, visitors will also be able to discover previously unseen works that once belonged to the collector, as well as a hitherto unknown aspect of his daily life: the practice of drawing.
