Exposition - Récits Décoloniaux - Faut-il brûler les musées ?

Exhibition, Graphic Arts in Nancy
10 Full-fare
  • The provocative title of this edition of "Récits décoloniaux" stems from a long-standing tradition of mistrust of museums, forged as far back as the late 18th century. It stems from the question "Should we burn the Louvre?" posed in 1921 in the avant-garde magazine L'Esprit nouveau. Beyond its iconoclasm, the subject conceals a rich and crucial debate, apparent from the very birth of museums, on the very role and legitimacy of these institutions with a so-called universal vocation.

The provocative title of this edition of "Récits décoloniaux" stems from a long-standing tradition of mistrust of museums, forged as far back as the late 18th century.

The exhibition, designed by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy and the Palais des Ducs de Lorraine - Musée lorrain, aims to shed light on the history of a part of their collections, revealing another function of the museum: that of an instrument of domination.
