Métro'folies - Exposition - Mosaïque d'Architectures - Au Temps de l'Art déco en Meurthe-et-Moselle

Exhibition, Graphic Arts in Nancy
  • The rise of Art Deco marked the apogee of the diversity of architectural arts and styles. Classicism, historicism, eclecticism, regionalism, Art Nouveau, modernism, prefabricated architecture - all these notions and trends existed before Art Deco and continue to evolve thanks to it, even though they sometimes clash.

The rise of Art Deco marked the apogee of the diversity of architectural arts and styles. Classicism, historicism, eclecticism, regionalism, Art Nouveau, modernism, prefabricated architecture - all these notions and trends existed before Art Deco and continue to evolve thanks to it, even though they sometimes clash.
None of them necessarily excludes the other, and Art Deco can just as easily combine with neo-classicism, born in reaction to Art Nouveau, as it can blend with regionalism or rejuvenate a historic style by simplifying its forms. The only trend that seems a priori incompatible with Art Deco is the Modern Movement of the 1920s, which rejected ornamentation. Yet some architects succeeded in fusing the principles of one with the vocabulary of the other to create hybrid works.
The Archives départementales de Meurthe-et-Moselle (Meurthe-et-Moselle departmental archives) propose to explore these keys to understanding through examples of buildings, both well-known and little-known, and documents, often unpublished, from their collections.

    Free admission.
