Every year, Nancy puts on a dazzling display for the feast of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Lorraine and a protector of children. The city holds six weeks of celebrations with a main weekend of special events in early December. All of Nancy lights up and moves to the beat of a magical and free programme of events. Experience the enchanting, joyful, gourmet, and surprising world of Saint Nicholas during the end-of-year holidays!

A breath-taking view

Climb aboard the big wheel on Place de la Carrière for an incredible view of the city’s 18th-century architectural ensemble! While waiting in the queue, children (and adults) get impatient, and there’s a bit of teasing for those who are nervous for the ride. Settle into the pod and slowly begin your ascent. Place Vaudémont is already in view, and you’ll soon admire the Ville Vieille on one side of the ride. On the other side, the horizon emerges little by little above the Arc Héré triumphal arch, with the festive Place Stanislas in sight. It’s the perfect time to take out your camera or phone and capture the moment (without forgetting to enjoy it in the present!). At night, the view is even more magical, with illuminations throughout the city and the lights of the Christmas tree on Place Stanislas.

Back on stable ground, just at the foot of the big wheel, take a stroll through the Christmas village of La Marmaille and enjoy a mulled wine, an aperitif, or a meal on the go while the kids take a ride on the carousel.

Saint Nicholas Villages

Nancy’s Christmas markets, called the Saint Nicholas Villages, are set up all over the city during the Saint Nicholas festivities. A not-to-be-missed stop to experience the magical atmosphere of the end-of-year holidays and the perfect place to share in the festivities with the whole family.

Plenty of wooden chalets with twinkling lights and holiday decor offer hundreds of products to discover, taste, or admire, with events and activities to fully immerse you in the Saint Nicholas experience.

Good times to share

There’s no shortage of places to get together and create lasting memories as a family during the Saint Nicholas festivities. Every year, Place Simone Veil is transformed into a giant outdoor ice skating rink. Figure skating, tricks, or a couple of turns around the rink, it’s up to you!
To perk up after skating, gather around a table to share a delicious cheese fondue or a snack of sweet treats and hot drinks.

During this festive season, both young and old will love visiting the oldest village in the city, the Grand Village of Saint Nicholas on Place Charles III, for a ride on the carousel. Standing tall in the centre of the square, the carousel’s decor presents the heritage of the city.

Every evening, discover the sound and light show “Les Rendez-vous de Saint-Nicolas” on Place Stanislas, voted France’s favourite monument in 2021 and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 10-minute video projected on the façade of City Hall tells the legend of Saint Nicholas with a colourful and musical display for the whole family.

During the main Saint Nicholas weekend, the whole city comes alive to celebrate, with two days of street performances, concerts, colourful rides, and of course the long-awaited parade with the floats of the city and the characters of the legend of Saint Nicholas.

Let yourself be carried away by the warm-hearted, friendly, and festive atmosphere of Nancy’s Saint Nicholas festivities!
